When conducting a pre-screen background investigation, a criminal history is of utmost importance. These searches typically are placed in two main categories: arrest records and conviction records. The use of each category has its strengths and weaknesses, so it is important for you to evaluate what you are trying to achieve to determine which is best for your application.
Federal-level searches involve cases in which a person was tried by the United States government in a U.S. District Court. These searches are conducted using a public access system and are researched court by court. The information returned will consist of the defendant’s name, case number, case type and any available case details. One disadvantage to the federal access system is that the defendant’s identifiers usually are limited to name only. Therefore, if a match is found, additional research may be required at the court level to confirm a positive identification. If this is necessary, additional research costs may be incurred.
