3 Questions to Ask When You Do Background Checks for Employment Purposes
When you’re thinking about hiring a new employee, it makes sense to do a background check. That way you find out if they are, in fact, who they claim to be. Do they have the number of years of work experience that they claim to have on their resume? Do they have the college degree that they say they have? It’s not unusual for people to embellish their resumes when they go job-searching. But as an employer, you are obviously looking for someone who is everything they claim to be. Here are three questions to ask when doing a background check for employment purposes:
Are They Filling in the Gaps for Background Checks for Employment Purposes?
It makes sense to use a background check to figure out if the person actually worked at all the places they claimed to work at and for as long as they claimed to. Often, people won’t outright lie about where they worked but they might claim to have a couple of years more work experience than they actually do. This is often done by filling in the gaps between jobs when they might not actually have been working.
Are They Academically Proficient?
When it comes to academics, some people might write that they have a college degree even if they didn’t actually finish college. They might claim to have majored in a certain subject that is closer to what you are looking for. So this is worth looking into when you do a background check. Plus, you might also want to check to make sure that their GPA is actually as high as they claim it is and whether they got into all the honorary societies they claimed to get into.
Are Their References Legitimate?
It makes sense to call the candidate’s references and find out what they have to say about the candidate. You might also want to make sure that the references that the candidate has listed are, in fact, legitimate. Indeed, sometimes a candidate might give you a friend’s phone number and claim they work with a previous employer.
